In the bubble

I like to think of our two day hospital stay after Porter's birth as being inside of a bubble. It's as if time stands still, nothing else matters except this brand new baby and soaking in the newness of it all. I have no idea what the weather was like from July 11-13. I didn't have the added responsibility of parenting Truman and Cecelia, since the grandparents saved the day with childcare during the hospital stay. The staff brought us ice water (with the best ice ever--just like Sonic!), room service brought us food, the housekeepers cleaned up our room for us, and the nurses watched our newborn baby at night so we could sleep. Medical professionals monitored Porter and myself to make sure all was well. Those first few days of Porter's life are like a dream and I've ALWAYS loved the hours spent in the hospital because of the bubble effect. Sure, the bed isn't the most comfortable and I'm not exactly feeling like myself immediately after birth. But I will always cherish the time we had with each child in the hospital, and I'm always a little sad when it's over. It helps that I'm a big fan of the hospital itself and our care providers, too, since I know not everyone enjoys their time away from home for a birth.

This time around, it didn't work out for Andrea to photograph Porter's birth. We left it open so that IF he was born during a time when she had childcare and didn't have to scramble to get up to the hospital, then we both agreed we had to do it again. But nope, Andrea didn't have childcare on July 11 so no birth photography for baby number three like we had for Cecelia. Instead, she came the next morning and snapped some pictures of our newborn baby and his parents---living inside of the magical hospital days bubble.

As always, I'm a huge fan of Andrea Weiss Photography and have lost track of the number of sessions A has done for us over the past six years. Andrea is one of my good friends along with being our family photographer---our walls would be bare without her;) I love these images so much. Porter looks like the sweetest little angel and Andrea captured the moment perfectly: with our son not even a full 24 hours old. The entire album is on Flickr here, but I have to show you a few of my absolute favorites, too.

  3. Beautiful pictures!
My hospital stay felt very much the same. Recovering from a c/s was horrible but the staff was so fantastic. The L&D had only been open for 6 months but they really did an amazing job hiring excellent nurses and doctors. I cried my eyes out when we were discharged and still, every time I drive past the hospital (which is often) I get emotional. They called about a month after J was born to ask how everything was with her and how my hospital experience was and I started crying again!! There really is something special about that bubble. Sometimes, I wish I could go back! :)

  4. Absolutely beautiful and priceless.

Hey A, what are the odds you'll still be pregnant and want to snap a few pics like this for me when baby E is born? ;) They are simply perfect!!

Love the bubble of those first couple of days. Sigh.

  5. Beautiful!!

I totally relate to the "bubble" effect and especially to your experience since I had my daughter in the same hospital and had the same OB as you (and likely many of the same nurses). Wonderful memories of such a special time! Thanks so very much for sharing.

  6. Beyond beautiful pictures and love the fitting "bubble" description! If you have time during your maternity leave for "A day in the life of Truman and Cecilia" I would love reading about what host of different activities you engage them in during the day to keep them busy!! I need ideas and would really love to hear what you have found that they enjoy. How often do you change activities and do they do well independently for a time, or not quite yet? Would love any ideas you would be willing to share on how to schedule/structure a toddler's day! :)
